Led by visionary point person, Jan Frans, and assisted by administrative assistants and project consultants, The Oasis Project began as a vision to serve various needs in the Lake Country community in Western Waukesha County. After input from churches, businesses, school districts, and community leaders, The Oasis Project began as a dream, but it became a serious exploration in the fall of 2014 to determine community needs and resources to make it all happen. Jan began to meet with assistants, leaders of nonprofit organizations, school district leaders, leaders in the business community, financial advisors and others to explore the feasibility and do-ability of a project of this magnitude. We have been recognized by the U.S. Government as a a 501c3 charity since April 19, 2016.

In our first year of operation in (September 2015), 68% of the children we served were reading significantly below their grade level. By January 2016, only 20% were reading below grade level. In the 2016-2017 school year, at one school 100% of Oasis students reached their target goal in math compared to 60% of the general population.  Likewise in that school, 72% of Oasis students reached their target goal in reading compared to 62% of the general population.

Not only has strong academic achievement been recognized by administrators, but classroom teachers reported the Oasis students gained more confidence both emotionally and socially. One principal reported that children with significant disciplinary issues loved coming to Oasis and showed NO disciplinary problems when being tutored. They insisted that nothing in their schedule interfere with their “reading buddy” time. We believe this loving care will translate into more success in life for these children and will help to “level the playing field” for them as they move forward in life.
